"Women should carry pepper spray for protection, but they also should learn the proper way to use it, police say.

"Although pepper spray is illegal in some states, Texans are free to carry the eye-scorching spray. But many Texans have missed their mark.

"From 1998 to 2002, nearly 85 percent of people who came in contact with pepper spray were unintentional victims, according to the Texas Department of Health. About 97 percent of those sprayed suffered at least some clinical effects, the department said. Experts advise keeping canisters away from children and learning the proper way to use them..."
